Frequently Asked Questions

What is speech therapy?

Speech therapy helps children develop the skills they need to communicate effectively — whether that’s through spoken words, gestures, signs, or AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication). Our sessions focus on building connection and confidence while supporting language development, speech clarity, social communication, and overall expression in ways that feel natural and fun.

What is occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) helps children build the skills needed for everyday life — from play and self-care to attention and sensory regulation. Our OT services support fine motor skills, sensory processing, motor coordination, and emotional regulation to help children feel more comfortable, confident, and capable in their daily routines.

What does “neuro-affirming” mean?

Being neuro-affirming means we celebrate and support every child’s unique way of thinking, learning, and communicating. Rather than trying to change who a child is, we focus on understanding their strengths, respecting their needs, and helping them grow in ways that feel authentic to them.

What is play-based therapy?

Play is a child’s most natural way of learning. In play-based sessions, children are motivated, engaged, and relaxed — which allows for meaningful growth. Our therapists use play as a bridge to build communication, social, and motor skills while keeping sessions positive, enjoyable, and individualized.

What is Gestalt Language Processing?

Some children learn language in “chunks” or scripts (like repeating phrases from shows or songs) before breaking them down into individual words — this is called Gestalt Language Processing (GLP). A certified GLP therapist helps children move from using echolalic language toward developing their own self-generated communication, using the Natural Language Acquisition framework.

What is AAC and how can it help my child?

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication — tools and strategies that support communication beyond spoken words. This may include picture symbols, speech-generating devices, or sign language. AAC can help children express themselves more fully, reduce frustration, and build meaningful connections with others.

How do I know if my child could benefit from therapy?

If you’ve noticed challenges in your child’s communication, play, behavior, or daily routines — or if you simply feel they could use extra support — therapy may help. We start with an evaluation to understand your child’s strengths, needs, and goals, and then design a personalized plan that fits your family.

What does the evaluation process look like?

Evaluations are a gentle, collaborative process. We’ll gather information from you, observe your child during play or structured tasks, and use standardized and informal assessments as appropriate. Afterward, we’ll meet with you to review the results, discuss recommendations, and create an individualized therapy plan together.

How often will my child attend therapy?

Therapy frequency is based on your child’s needs and goals. Most families attend sessions once or twice per week, though intensive or consultative models are also available. We’ll work together to find the best schedule for your child’s progress and your family’s routines.

Do you offer parent coaching or collaboration with other providers?

Yes! Parent involvement is an essential part of our approach. We offer caregiver coaching sessions and collaborate with schools, other therapists, and medical providers to ensure consistent, whole-child support across all environments.

How do you involve parents/caregivers in therapy?

Parent involvement is at the heart of our work. We provide ongoing education, coaching, and communication so you feel confident supporting your child at home. We encourage family participation whenever possible. Observing sessions or joining in helps you learn strategies you can use at home, and ensures therapy feels consistent and supportive for your child. You’re a key part of the therapy team!

What types of payment do you accept?

We accept private pay (cash, check, credit card) and are direct billers with the Step Up for Students Unique Abilities Scholarship. We do not accept insurance at this time but will provide a Superbill if your insurance is willing to reimburse for services. Reimbursement with insurance is variable and up to you to contact your provider for accurate information.
